Second Innings as PM

The top news of the day seems to be Manmohan Singh being sworn in as the Prime Minister of India. And he now holds of the honor of being only the second PM to have taken office twice in a row, after Nehru, and that too after having served one full term. The Congress-led coalition did take up the elections with a substantial win, but with the exit of the regional DMK in the south there is only a slight dent to its supprot. The Congress promises another term of social reforms and economic stability, but that remains to be seen!

Indeed two consecutive terms is quite a rarity in the Indian legislature. Typically the Indian parliament elections have always exhibited an anti-incumbent outlook, and it is not rare for the top political parties to alternate as the ruling government. This is quite unlike the US where the Democrats and the Republicans can expect terms back to back, of course assuming theit times in office were fairly successful. Only time will tell if this win for the Congress works in its favor, and whether it proves its merit.

Foot Ball Played at FULL

Jan 24/25 has the FA cup fourth round fixtures and again my personal favorites are in action in at Anfield . Liverpool takes on their harsh rival Everton. This is one of the most important draw according to me. Jan 24/25 will witness all major football Clubs in action. Hope Liverpool wins in this MercySide derby and also win FA cup this time.

Taylored Australia

Mark Taylor was such a masterful opening batsman, slip fielder and captain for Australia that he was looked upon as an allrounder. A heavily built left-hander who played classically late, Taylor made 839 Test runs on his first England tour (1989) and for most of his 104 Tests remained reassuringly solid. He was equally dependable at first slip, where he cradled most of his world-record 157 catches. After he inherited the captaincy from Allan Border in 1994-95 he began with a pair, but soon added such acute tactical vibrancy that the following year Australia toppled West Indies in the Caribbean to become unofficial world champions. Taylor's leadership and diplomacy marked him out as one of Australia's greatest captains.

Is This A Life Worth Living?

As the adage goes, "cursed are those who are born during the age of transition." This Chinese proverbial plight applies more so in the case of the struggling millions in the over-crowded metropolitan cities, belonging to the poor countries. With due regard to our President's vision relating to provision of urban amenities in rural areas, it is debatable whether urban amenities are conspicuous by their absence or mismanagement thanks to the unenviable capacity of the city administration to do so.

No doubt the quality of life in terms of material welfare has been enhanced for the average middle-income group given the globalised scenario. Yet what is being denied raises the issue whether it is all really worth the trouble in terms of the compromises that are made.

What is at stake is the ecological sensitivity of citizens. As a citizen, one has the fundamental right to enjoy a pollution free environment and decongested urban spaces for healthy and prosperous living.

"Open spaces" allow the weary citizens to steam off after a day's slogging, especially in a tropical climate. In fact, the sanity of city life is being preserved only in the open spaces. If overcrowding and spurt in vehicular traffic eat into the "open spaces" available to the common man, it would hamper his emotional and psychological well-being and is nothing short of a violation of human rights.

The problems relating to negative externalities due to overcrowding of public spaces affect both the rich and the poor alike. Yoga, transcendental meditation, gym, and other outlets are the available stress relievers to the higher income groups for recharging themselves. The low-income groups, lacking both in awareness and affordability, naturally look upon the open space as lubricating mechanism for their deprivation in private spaces. They invariably emerge from polluted and overcrowded slums and it is not only ethical but also sensible not to deprive them of open spaces lest there should be more crime and violence.

WE HAVE heard it before, read it in the papers, our parents may have appealed to us, or our own weighing machines might have smiled at us disdainfully.

How many of us know at least two others our own age who are overweight, who suffer from premature health problems, who enthusiastically await the weekend so they can drown themselves in a pitcher of beer and disappear behind the collective clouds of smoke generously produced in the name of "friendship," whose fingers are active on keyboard while the rest of their body switches off to slumber?

Some wonder at the prevalence of ill health habits despite the presence of awareness against them. A key issue that our present day youth need to address is prevention — of health problems and negative health behaviours, also called self-compromising health behaviours.

Prevention means taking measures to combat risk factors for illness before an illness ever has a chance to develop (Shelley Taylor).

There are always cures to help one recover from stress-induced headaches, from alcohol-related health problems, high blood pressure due to obesity. Why are there just as few measures to prevent these illnesses in the first place? The concept that we need not put our bodies through the trauma of pain and palliatives has not yet permeated our ways of thinking and behaving.

Our older generations might not have consciously emphasised preventive measures — perhaps they did not have to. Children back then, as your grandfather will fondly recollect, were fit and fine, enjoying outdoor activities and running about in glee; today's little ones have pot bellies and run about too, a little sluggishly.

A chief concern in the area of health psychology today is the prevention of ill health behaviours, such as smoking, alcoholism, over eating, etc., and their consequences.

Primary prevention involves instilling good health habits and changing poor ones. Several factors play a role here. Given how important peer relationships are to youngsters, we can use it to advantage by instilling these good habits among them.
