Devar Magan

Devar Magan is a Tamil feature film directed by veteran director Bharathan. Critically considered by some to be amongst the best films released in the Tamil film industry, the film stars Sivaji Ganesan, Kamal Haasan, Nasser, Revathi and Gouthami in acclaimed roles.

The film was also a commercial hit upon release. Ilaiyaraaja composes the film’s score and soundtrack. Priyadarshan later remade the movie into Hindi as Virasat. India nominated Thevar Magan as its entry for the Best Foreign Language Film for the Academy Awards in 1992. The Britain-educated Shakti (Kamal Haasan), son of a rural village chieftain Periya-thevar (Sivaji Ganesan) returns home to his village after a long stay abroad.

Accompanying Shakti is his girlfriend (Gouthami), with whom he intends to settle in a city and start a restaurant business. However, his father hopes he will don the patriarchal mantle, a role that the highly educated Shakti finds alien to him and distasteful primarily because of the bloody feud between factions aligned with his father and his paternal uncle, Chinna Thevar & his son, Maya Thevan (Nasser). Violent confrontations between both sides leading to loss of lives and a humiliating Panchayat trial that leads to his father's death, forces Shakti to re-examine his initial judgment and adopt the patriarchal mantle that he initially despised.
