Mobile to Immobilize

The technology has always been improving to make us communicate easily. The Mobile Technology is one such technology which has helped and made this big earth look almost very small like how a star appears when seen from earth.

The technology has found from the beginning has havoc associated with it. The mobile phone technology use the medium which naturally exist but still it causes a lot of problem to human beings

The associated technology also has a greater impact. For instance Bluetooth technology when power on and kept in pant pockets are expected to create prostate cancer in men and also due to radiation in general it is not advisable to keep the cell phone near the chest or heart region due to potential ability of radiation to penetrate.

Extensive use of mobile phone will cause brain tumor analogous to lung cancer which a person will get due to smoking. I heard that cell phone in it low battery state produces much times higher radiations in its low battery state which causes harm to ear and make its ability to hear dwindle off.

We have reached a stage in which we cannot stop the use of mobile phone but we can still avoid some problems associated with it. If it is not confidential you can always put your cell phone on loud speaker mode and keep the phone at a distance and speak. If so very confidential matter you can try using the mobile phone using head sets. We must stop giving mobile phone to children under age 7 at least. It is better that not to give children under age 10 also. Never use the mobile phone in its low batter state. Extensive continuous use of mobile phone cause neck pain, ear pains, head ache and has the ability to affect brain too.

Tobacco :also Sets fire to your Back too

Tobacco and smoking is been one of the major causes of deaths around the world. One of the major cause of Lung cancer. Being a carcinogenic substance the probability of a person addicted to it getting cancer is sure similar to a ball attracted to the ground due to gravity.

The use of these substance has a number of confirmed ill effects which includes
  • Tobacco and smoking kills a person
  • Causes poverty(exacerbates poverty)
  • Production of tobacco causes pollution
  • It causes reduction in economic productivity
  • It employs many thousands of people, it can be considered a wasted labour.
  • It causes wastage of capital and resources used up
Many farmers also consider the plantation of tobacco as a profitable source of income and hence they tend to plot tobacco in the land which is fertile enough to cultivate food crops this ultimately causes the net reduction of food crops around the world. This adds fuel to the existing fire of global food crisis.

With all potential know causes when government tried to curb tobacco and smoking the tobacco industries with the enormous resources and liquidity, it weakened the laws which were enforced against the use of it.

What could have the been the major reason for this much huge fan following behind tobacco and smoking. Only answer is Curiosity drags them, addiction persists them, withdrawal symptoms hold them.

To reduce the theft The theif himself must realize it is wrong and similarly to avoid all problems it is the smoker who should have the required awarness.

Doctor On Duty : Patient Out Of Tragedy

I heard about a cancer which a woman had had, considered incurable by many doctors and hospitals here was saved by my uncle. Wow what an effort.

The lady met my uncle when she was said that you can be cured, but when she met this oncologist she had developed a ray of hope in her mind with the confident speech of the doctor. Boosting the confidence in a patient is one of the important duties of a doctor. Well done and the first step in curing her was done.

He analyses the patient and found his patient suffering from psedomyxoma peritoni. As said before this case was rejected by many hospitals the oncologist with the use of special drugs which acts on the cancer cell leaving behind normal cells. So the cancer cells were targeted leaving the normal cells untouched.

Along with a crew of Doctors they decided to remove the cancer from the body. So the call for the hour was to go for a surgery. During the course of the operation this doctor was monitoring the cancer very dutifully and applied chemotherapy when needed so that the treatment gets carried to the intricate parts effectively.

And finally the patient was cured. The patient was aged 71 and she felt very happy to have been back on normal condition after removal of about 15 kg jelly like substance which was collected in her body.

Combating Addiction

The desire for instant gratification and high income constitute an explosive combination
Substance abuse is a global problem today. This poses a threat to all as it affects the physical, psychological, behavioral and social functioning of the individual and in turn, that of society.
Substances commonly abused include tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, heroin, cocaine, cough syrup, ecstasy and other sedatives.

Abuse of alcohol, cannabis and brown sugar (heroin) seems to be rampant among the lower socio-economic group. The richer class seems to be abusing substances such as cocaine, ecstasy and designer drugs.
Curiosity Factor

Alcohol and drug use invariably starts as a casual act kindled by curiosity, peer pressure or the need to prove one’s willingness to ‘belong’ to a group. What starts off casually very often results in psychological and physical dependence on drugs.

The risk-taking attitude of the younger generation and their high incomes are two of the primary reasons for the increasing problem of substance abuse. Most of the young people employed in the newly created jobs often earn substantially higher incomes than their parents.

This leads to a decreased control/influence of parents. The desire for instant gratification and high income constitute an explosive combination.

The attitude of society towards alcohol use also has changed. We have become more ‘liberal’ over the years. Illegal drugs such as cannabis, heroin, cocaine and ecstasy are also available depending on the amount of money a person is prepared to spend. From being a problem of a select few of the higher income groups, drugs have slowly permeated into every segment of society. As it stands now, no child is safe in this world where prevalence of alcohol and drug use is steadily increasing.

While any youngster is at risk, certain factors place him/her in the high risk group. The general trend would be to experiment with tobacco, then alcohol followed by other drugs like cannabis and heroin.

A childhood history of behavioral problems such as truancy, lying, stealing, rebellious nature, and poor socialization skills makes a person more prone to drug use. Poor academic performance, disciplinary problems, low self-esteem and a feeling of alienation may indicate that the person has a problem. Because of greater susceptibility to peer influence when friends have a favorable attitude towards drug-taking, the chance of use is higher.

The use of drugs affects a person in all possible ways, damaging every facet of his life. There is a change in the physical appearance — he develops a haggard, dull, apathetic look. The problem is compounded by loss of appetite, loss of weight, chronic cough, unexplained needle marks and poor physical hygiene. The youngster loses interest in his personal appearance and all goal oriented activities are forgotten. Interest centers only on his drug taking activities.

There is deterioration in the value system. Lying and stealing become more evident. Family relationships break down as there is little communication with others — the person prefers to spend time alone. Irritability increases with temper outbursts and rapid mood swings.

Dichotomy-A Natural Phenomenon

Behavior is nothing but our reaction to circumstances. So there is no surprise in people behaving differently in different occasion. Some times parents doesn't know the real face of their children and may have a different perception about them.Dichotomy is imbibed in nature, the same ocean which is calm could also raise like tsunami to cause havoc.

A stone only when chiseled becomes a beautiful sculpture. Its human nature to learn a and mold his/her character as one grows. Though we cannot change others action but we can change the way we react to it.That's why old people seldom get anger,as they have chosen how to react by virtue of their experience.

Salvation Lies Within

Mother nature provides us with plethora of fruits, vegetables etc, which are enriched with goodness. One can get any nutrient source from natural sources. Unfortunately not many sons of her know about her richness.

This is a world in which processed goods sells more than natural ones.
People crave to improve their skin pigment by bathing in chemicals. Vitamins A ,C which are essential for supple skin, are present in numerous fruits and vegetables. One thing is rest assured, People who use those creams may not know this fact but those celebrities who endorse those products are sure to know about these.

Medical Ethics

"To Cure sometimes, to relieve often and to comfort always" is quoted as the duty of physicians. But a cursory survey of patients often conveys a different picture. Many physicians are often perceived as rude and patronising, which then begets the question `why.'

The answer to this question is not simple. The genesis of this behaviour among many doctors lies in their training in medical colleges, rather the `absence' of education about medical ethics. The subject of medical ethics is given prime importance in all western medical schools, but is surprisingly shelved away by the Indian medical curriculum. It is included under Forensic Medicine, which essentially deals with the legal aspects of medicine. I still fail to see the connection, as FM is essentially more about corpses, rather than living beings! In any case, medical ethics is a subject, which ought to be taught by clinicians, which is seldom done in most medical colleges.

To the common man (who is incidentally the patient), medical ethics is a topic, which deals with the following: duty of a physician, his limitations, the rights of patients and physician-patient issues like confidentiality, etc. At the outset, it might all sound like a lot of common sense, but then common sense isn't that common a commodity either!

Health In Your Hands

Waterborne diseases pose one of the biggest challenges for public health in India. Diarrhoeal diseases are the largest killers of children in India. India has more than 10 million officially reported cases of diarrhoea per annum, but the actual number must be many times higher. Given the rather poor quality of public water supply and sanitation services in India, one of the most cost-effective interventions for improving community health would be promotion of domestic and personal hygiene and management of drinking water quality at home. In this context, the Government of Kerala's proposed programme promoting the need for handwashing with soap at key health moments is a welcome and much needed addition to the overall set of public health priorities.

In the recent past, there has been a growing acceptance of the fact that providing safe drinking water and adequate sanitation are key government social priorities that will help address the waterborne disease problem.

I believe that hygiene education programmes like those on handwashing with soap offer not just large health gains, but instant health gains as well. This is because there is no need for the government to make large time and money investments in creating programme implementation capacity. The public health benefits of this programme will accrue as soon as the poor change their hygiene habits at critical health moments like feeding and cleaning up children, and before taking meals.

Environmental health: an appraisal

Having taken note of the disturbing trend in the management of environmental issues, I considered it appropriate to make an appraisal of the situation in terms of human health. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has observed that over 70 per cent of all human ailments are influenced by environmental deterioration. The industries are the sources of hazardous emissions and effluents. The use of chemical insecticides and pesticides in agro management also leaves dangerous residues. Transport, whether land borne, water borne or airborne, does contaminate the environment. Public health infrastructure — sewage, garbage, drainage — has a detrimental impact on the environment. The food we eat, the water we drink and the house we live in are not free from contaminants, affecting our health, and causing a spectrum of ailments.

What is at stake is the way the environmental issues are handled. For over three decades, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has been deliberating on the environmental issues through a spectrum of expert groups and bodies from which "Sustainable Development" concept has emerged as a viable approach, in achieving an equitable complementarity in environment and development, by way of evolving mechanisms for checks and balances, in both ecology and economy, with total regard for stable livelihood opportunities and betterment of health.

I do believe that people's participation is inevitable in the successful conduct of both development and environment. But the tendency of people's groups and individuals is to highlight the environmental hazards leading to confusion, disinformation and panic of a tragedy facing the community. In fact, a totally scientific issue with achievable solutions is converted into a social issue or even a political issue. The net result is the cessation of the development process, or even closure of highly profitable establishments, disturbing the livelihood of the people.

In almost all agitational methods as instruments in highlighting an environmental issue, emotions of the community are triggered without any rationale, and without taking into account the degree of disruption to developmental activity and the means of livelihood of the people. It is therefore imperative that an agenda of sustainable development deserved to be put in place, powered by science and technology as the tools for bringing about complementarity in environment and development. In such a scheme, issues raised by the people may be addressed suitably through appropriate alternatives like detoxification of toxic effluent resources, quality certification of products and measures to reduce risks and betterment of safety systems.

In order to achieve the above desirable level of management, there is need to evolve policies, laws and other statutory measures, supported also by credible institutional expertise providing scientific inputs. In order to coordinate, manage and control the successful implementation of sustainable development alternative as a viable solution to environmental issues, a statutory body namely "Environmental Monitoring and Management Authority" be constituted with provision for accommodating people drawn from Academia, Technology, Management, and Government together with people's representatives.

Laugh and The World Laughs Too

Remember the movie 'Patch Adams' where Robin Williams used laughter as a healing therapy, in reality that works. Laughter can reduce your stress levels, and has a positive impact on your body, both physically and mentally.

This how laughter clubs were formed in India and around the world, where people - senior citizens, housewives, corporates etc - get together in a garden or any open space and laugh away to glory.

It is believed that while laughing the human brain secretes the 'feel good' hormone endorphine and there by reducing the levels of cortisol - a stress hormone. Laughter also increases oxygen supply in the body, as a result you are hale and hearty.

Why should you laugh everyday?

  • It strengthens your immune system
  • Increases bloody supply to the face, so your skin glows
  • Good for the heart, and controls blood pressure
  • Increases oxygen supply, that's good for the system
  • It will reduce depression and anxiety in your life

Laugh and the world laughs with you. There should be laugh breaks in office, it would certainly liven up the atmosphere.

Twisted Medical Facts

The British Medical Journal recently noted that Indian movies are the only place where a doctor could feel the pulse of a woman and tell her that she was pregnant. While this may be a glaring example of how much the Indian movies are out of touch with the ground realities of modern medicine, sadly it is not the only one.

Traumatic amnesia

Take the example of the often repeated formula of a movie where the "Hero" takes a hit on his head and promptly forgets everything about himself. This is a kind of propaganda that has taken a Goebbelsian proportion because it remains a fact that only a person with psychogenic amnesia loses his personal information like name and age and not someone with traumatic amnesia.

Even if one were to agree that psychogenic amnesia were secondary to trauma, one can hardly justify the treatment that is propounded wherein a suitably directed hit at the same spot under similar circumstances would promptly put the patient back on the path to recovery. Far from being the kiss (or is it the stroke) of life it might be the last nail in the patient's coffin.

This is exactly the kind of treatment that Sir Robert Hutchison prays to god to deliver us from when he said, "From making the cure of a disease more grievous than its endurance." Among the other fallacies is the electro convulsive therapy that is grotesquely given the misnomer of "shock therapy." A highly refined therapeutic procedure done under tightly controlled circumstances is given the colour of a kind of torture which might send a chill down the spine of a tinpot dictator. Moreover it has specific indications and is not necessarily given every time someone tries to jump over the boundaries of a mental asylum.

Snake bite

One more instance of a movie setting a bad precedent is seen when someone in the movie is bitten by a snake. The events that follow a snake bite are nothing short of a pantomime. The one thing that a person must desist from is to try and suck the poison out from the site of snake bite. Though the intention might be right, it hardly serves the purpose and the act may cause the transmission of infection from the person's mouth to the already beleaguered patient.

It seems that a similar case can be made out for the film makers when they gently suggest to the gullible audience that eating papayas can cause abortion or that a tread-mill test is used to obtain an ElectroEncephaloGram(EEG) and not ElectroCardioGram(ECG). In fact the latter example was woven into the story line of a recent bollywood movie where the protagonist had a brain tumour.

Finally, I found that the film makers were outdone in this art of twisting medical facts by a section of politicians who are represented by a person who claimed at an international conference on AIDS at Bangkok that a holy dip in the river Ganga would rid a person of his malady. But then nothing less was expected of them.
